SMTP alarms are one of the simplest alarm types to set up in Sureview. A device sends an email addressed to an alarm-specific address, Sureview receives it and raises an alarm using the email's subject line as the alarm text.
Important
The most common way to send SMTP alarms into Sureview is by configuring the sending device's SMTP server address to point to your Sureview IP/DNS address (port 25). In a standard configuration, the email addresses used aren't real, publicly routable addresses, so they won't work via an online mail service such as Gmail or Outlook. See the SMTP Alarm Receipt technical support page for details.
Step 1 - Create a new device
Set up a new device as you normally would, but ensure you choose the “Generic Email Alarm” Type and add in the Host IP Address of the system that will be sending the email (this is to ensure the source IP address is added to the SMTP Alarm Whitelist and is allowed into the system)
Step 2 - Add the Alarm Point
Once Saved, choose “alarms” on the left, then “Add Alarm”:
Create a new alarm, ensuring you use the “Device” you just created in the step above, Input 1 must be an integer and is the ID you would like the alarm to have. It will also serve as part of the address to send the email to.
Step 3 - Find the IDs for your TO Email address
Once this is set-up the alarm can be triggered by sending an email to SureView using the following format:
SDeviceID.AInput1@yourdomain.xyz
The device ID can be found at the top of the Device:
And Input 1 can be found on the alarm you want to send to:
So in this example the address would be:
Step 4 - Configure your device
Configure your emailing device to send an email to the given email address. The standard approach is to set your Sureview Server as the SMTP Server address (using port 25), but this isn't suitable for every device or network setup. Check the SMTP Alarm Receipt technical support page for full configuration details before proceeding.
